…As Executives Divided Over Moves By Chairman To Garner Support For Alan Cash
But for the timely intervention of the NPP’s La Dadekotopon constituency Chairperson, Gladys Dede, the NPP’s Greater Accra Regional Deputy Secretary, Mr. Alex Quartey, would by now have been nursing some serious injuries.
For her effort, Gladys Dede sustained some injuries.
This was the drama that unfolded at the Greater Accra Regional Headquarters of the NPP when the Regional Chairman, Mr. Sammy Crabbe, called what he purported to be a Regional Executive Meeting, but which turned out to be an a meeting that was called to get the executives to throw their support behind Alan Kyeremanteng.
Sources close to the meeting told this paper that the points of disagreement started when Sammy Crabbe told the meeting that he and some of his colleagues from the other regions, are planning to convene a meeting of all the chairmen of the two hundred and thirty constituencies in Ashanti region to discuss which one of the eighteen aspirants is likely to emerge as flagbearer of the party.
According to our sources, Mr. Crabbe explained that once the proposed meeting of all the chairmen identify a possible winner, they would send a delegation to negotiate with the identified aspirant for positions and other things.
Shat appeared to have given the game away was the fact that while most of the regional executives at the meeting were uncomfortable with the proposal, some among them, who are known to be supporters of Alan Kyeremanteng, were clearly in support of the proposal.
Notable among these Alan supporters are the Regional Organiser, Albert Afaglo, who, The Ghanaian Lens has learnt, is seen in the NPP as the Greater Accra Regional Coordinator for the Alan Campaign team; Mr. Omari Wadie, the Chairman of President Kufuor’s constituency, Ayawaso West Wugon; Mr. Ofori a.k.a Bella, Chairman of Kwamena Bartels’ Ablekuma North; and Alhaji Weija, chairman of the Weija constituency.
“It was clear that this was not something that was new to those people we know to be supporting Alan. They did not see anything wrong with the proposal and their enthusiasm for it made some of us to start being suspicious,” one source told this paper.
“Indeed, the chairman of the Asante Akyim North constituency, Nana Adu Asabre, came to the meeting with two other chairmen from the Ashanti region, and when they were given the chance to address us, Nana Adu Asabre made it clear that there is a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that he expects to be implemented, and that he is looking forward to the proposed Ashanti region meeting of all chairmen,” an apparently shocked source who was at the meeting confirmed to this paper.
According to our sources, it was after the ‘three-man delegation’ from the Ashanti region left the meeting that some of the participants at the meeting started expressing quiet discomfort with the proposal.
One such participant, The Ghanaian Lens has learnt, was Alex Quartey, who questioned Sammy Crabbe as to whether the national chairman of the party is aware of the proposed meeting of all chairmen of the party in Ashanti region. “The regional chairman’s response was that the proposed meeting is an informal event that was not being organized in the name of the party, therefore there is no need to inform the national chairman before holding such a meeting,” one of the sources told this paper.
“At this point,” the source continued, “Mr. Quartey interjected and pointed out that any meeting that calls all the chairmen of the 230 constituencies across the nation cannot be anything but a party event therefore the national chairman ought to be informed. This interjection by Alex Quartey angered Afaglo, who ordered Alex to shut up.”
“As Alex stood his grounds and pointed out that he has every right to say what he was saying, Afaglo, who was sitting way off from where Alex was seated, rushed on him in a manner that clearly showed that he was going to beat the daylight out of him. Thankfully, the La Dadekotopon Chairperson moved faster and positioned herself between the two, thus preventing Afaglo from beating Alex. But she ended up sustaining some injuries for her effort,” another source who was at the meeting told this paper.
