Bonwire ‘Kente’ festival re-launched

The Bonwire ‘Kente’ festival has been re-launched after a seven-year hiatus to drive the economy of the area.

Nana Bobie Ansah II, the chief of the town, said it would open up market opportunities for ‘Kente’ weavers in the community.

It would provide the platform to put on public show various colorful and brilliantly designed fabric – entirely hand-woven by the local weavers.

He added that every design had a story behind them, giving each cloth their own distinction.

Nana Bobie Ansah said the “Kente” industry, if well promoted, could give many of the nation’s unemployed young people jobs –lift them out of poverty and make their lives meaningful to themselves and the society.

Activities lined up for the week-long festival celebration include ‘Kente’ exhibition, clean-up exercises, inter-schools quiz competition and a grand durbar, expected to attract top government officials and other high profile personalities.

‘Kente’ is a silk and cotton fabric made of interwoven strips and is worn as a symbol of pride.
