Brimah Family breaks silence on chieftaincy dispute

The chieftaincy dispute among the Brimah family has stirred its leadership to set the records straight.

Addressing the media at the Chief Brimah Nii Brimah We in Accra, Mohammed Norgah, secretary to the Chief Brimah described the installation of Alhaji Oyibo Perigrino as the Chief Brimah as illegal.

He described Oyibo Perigrino as an illegitimate candidate taking into account the historical background of the Brimah’s saying, “ The Brimah family has seven gates as beneficiaries and line of lineage to ascend to the said position within the context of the traditional succession plan and established rules and regulations laid down to rotate the process from one gate to the other.”

He added that “ The immediate past chief Brimah, who passed away was the brother to the illegal candidate who they want to ascend to the position of chief Brimah VIII. The tenue of chief Brimah VII who happens to be Perigrino ended at his demise, and that marked the beginning of another term for the next gate according to the traditional succession plan.”

To Norgah, the illegal installation of Hamza Perigrino Brimah triggered a social uproar and confrontation within the family.

He mentioned that the seemingly tension attracted the attention of some public institutions like the Ga Paramount Stool, Ga Traditional Council, Office of the National Chief Imam, Bureau of National Investigations, among others to come in for resolution.

The Chief Brimah secretary indicated that the above institution's intervention to suspend all activities regarding the installation of a new chief notwithstanding, the other faction defied the Ga Traditional Council directive and unveiled Hamza Perigrino Brimah.

He said “ Our brothers from the other Gate(Perigrino Brimah) decided to play a smart card on the intelligence of the above institutions by telling them in the midst of the conflict that they were organizing a 40th day funeral Dua (Prayer of supplication) for their relative at the Rawlings Park where they later did the coronation.

“We remain focused and believe that the truth shall speak for us in due course by outdooring the legitimate and representative of the rightful gate in the person of Alhaji Mutiu Brimah VIII, who a group of young men, posing as National Security officers attacked at his Ofankor residence on Tuesday.”

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Chieftaincy Affairs earlier instructed in a letter copied to both factions and other stakeholders on the headline ‘Restraining of parties from outdooring a Yoruba chief at the Rawlings Park’ restraining them from any coronation until the final determination of the case.
