Britain has pledged one million pound sterling to support Ghana's Army contingent on peace-keeping mission in Cote d'Ivoire. This is in response to an appeal by the Ghana government for financial assistance for the contingent.
The Member of Parliament for Sunderland South and Minister for Africa at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Chris Mullin, announced this when he paid a courtesy call on President John Agyekum Kufuor at the Castle, Osu.
Concerns have been expressed about Britain?s support to Cote d?Ivoire, a former French colony to the neglect of war-torn Liberia, but Mr Mullin said Britain provided major financial assistance during the crisis in Sierra Leone and is looking up to the other members of the international community to help with the Liberian crisis.
He noted that Britain has been campaigning for support for Liberia through the United Nations and hopes that the United States will take the lead. ?We hope to see some movement in the next few days?.
During the visit, Mr Mullin would hold discussions with some Ministers of State, politicians, non-governmental organizations and the business community. He will also visit the British High Commission/British Council sponsored Islamic Girls Rights and Leadership Project at Nima in Accra.
