Ho, Feb 18, GNA- Ghana is to benefit from a British Government support to meet the target of the Millennium Development Goals. This is as a result of the country's adherence to democratic principles over the years, Mr Gordon Wetherell, British High Commissioner in Ghana said in Ho on Thursday.
Mr Wetherell was paying a courtesy call on the Togbe Afede XIV Agbogbomefia of Asogli State after commissioning an education resource centre at Sokode near Ho.
He said the progress in the relationship between the two countries arose from the country's exemplary conduct in upholding democratic principles in the West African sub-region ever since the country took the path of democratic governance.
Mr Wethrrell said it was because of the country's practice of open system of good governance that made the British Government to propose the doubling of aid to Africa.
He also reiterated the preparedness of his government to help build Africa's economic capacity through its own initiated policies to make it richer as well as assist conflict resolution on the continent.
Togbe Afede XIV expressed his appreciation to the British government for its support to the country and the Volta Region in particular in education, health, governance and private sector development.
He however noted that the region was still faced with development challenges particularly in the areas of education, health, agriculture and employment generation.
"Our agriculture for instance, is still at the basic subsistence level, and we are yet to see the growth of large plantations and industries that will provide needed jobs for our people", he said. Togbe Afede XIV said opportunities and possibilities still exist in the region and that chiefs were doing all within their means to turn the fortunes of the region because the people were looking up to them.
