Kumasi, March 27, GNA - The British Museum has organised a two-week training workshop in Kumasi to help upgrade and sharpen the skills of selected staff of the country's museums to properly manage and keep these places.

They were taught conservation techniques, object handling, display, label and mount-making.

The 14 participants were drawn from the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), Manhyia Palace, Prempeh II and Ho Museums, and the Department of Archeology and Heritage Studies of the University of Ghana.

Dr Kodzo Gavua, a Lecturer at the Department of Archeology and Heritage Studies said the training was appropriate given Ghana's drive to attract tourists to boost foreign exchange earnings.

He said museums have useful relics, historical artifacts and objects, which could also serve as good source of education to the younger generation if they were well maintained.

He, therefore, urged the participants to put into practice what they had been taught for the benefit of the nation.

Ms Heidi Cutts, an official of the British Museum and Coordinator of the workshop, said they would continue to collaborate with the Department of Archeology to train staff of the museums. Lieutenant Colonel Robert Affram, Acting General Officer Commanding the Northern Command of the GAF, said it was important that the nation protected its cultural and traditional heritage for posterity. 27 March 10
