British University honours veteran journalist

Accra, Dec. 4, GNA - The British-based Burkes University has awarded a Honorary Doctorate degree to Mr Joseph Godson Amamoo, a Veteran Diplomat and Journalist for his distinguished achievements in the field of journalism and public service, a statement issued in Accra said.

The statement said: "The University, through the unanimous recommendation from an Honorary Doctorates Committee, is pleased to confer upon you an Honorary Doctorate Award in recognition of your distinguished achievement in your professional career." It said the University offered honorary doctorate degrees to a limited number of candidates worldwide for their distinguished achievement and it allowed them to use the title Dr. and also use designatory letters after their names.

Dr Amamoo, who was once the Editor of the Ghanaian Times, is a barrister at law and the author of a several articles and a few books, including "The New Ghana" and "The Ambassador".

He was the Progress Party Member of Parliament for Agona Swedru in the Central Region from October 1969 to January 1972 and served as Deputy Minister of Health and of Lands and Mineral Resources. Currently he is the Chairman of the Board of the Ghana Consolidated Diamonds Limited (GCD) at Akwatia.

Dr Amamoo attended Agona Swedru Methodist School, Achimota College, and University of Ghana. He was called to the Bar at Middleton Temple, London, in 1965.

He is married to Bried, an Irish, and they have two daughters, both of whom are lawyers. He has five grand children.
