Brong Ahafo gives nod to 49 female assembly members

Sunyani, Feb. 1 GNA - The district and municipal assembly elections in the Brong Ahafo Region saw 49 out of 136 female aspirants winning their seats, whilst 712 out of the 1,830 male candidates also emerged victorious. The unit committee elections had 420 females as against 3,201 male contestants.

The statistics of the elections made available to the Ghana News Agenc= y by the Regional Office of the Electoral Commission showed that three out of the eight females who contested in the assembly elections in the in the Asunafo North district won. In the Asunafo South District one of the two females who contested the election won. The Asutifi District had a total of 13 female candidates out of which three won, whilst in Tano South District four out of the 14 female contestants won.

In the Tano North District only one out of four female candidates who stood for the election won whilst in the Sunyani Municipality four out of 1= 2 female candidates were victorious. The Sunyani West District recorded that five out of the eight female contestants won their seats and four out of the 10 candidates secured a place in the Berekum Municipality. Six out of the 10 women who contested the election in Dormaa Municipality won and only one out of the five female candidates in Dormaa East District was victorious.

In Jaman South District a total of nine females contested out of which three won, whilst in Jaman North District the two female contestants lost the race. Wenchi District had only one out of six female candidates who were successful whilst in Tain two out of the seven females won. Four out of nine females in Techiman Municipality won their seats whilst two out of eight females who contested in Nkoranza South District were successful. Nkoranza North District recorded five female candidates with only one of them winning.

In Kintampo South District, a female candidate contested but lost. There was no female contestant in Atebubu=96Amanten District whilst all the two female competitors in Pru District lost. Two female contestants out of the six in the Sene District won. Mr George Gyabaa, Regional Director of the Electoral Commission, who made the results available to the Ghana News Agency in Sunyani, said the assembly and the unit committee elections were successfully and peacefully conducted in all the district and municipal areas in the region. He said some district and municipal unit committee elections went to a run-off since the contestants did not meet the total number of five candidates to emerge as winners. The regional director said the run-off elections would be conducted in Pru District, Prang North, Ankobra and Nsesereso in Sunyani West District, Duadaso Number Two in Jaman North District, New Town and Mangoase in Bereku= m District, Kwame Tintin in Tain District, Atekyem in Tano South District, Garadima in Atebubu-Amanten District and Kobre and Palabo Zongo in Pru District. He said the elections at Awiamu in the Asunafo South District were cancelled when it came to light that one candidate was not a registered voter. The total percentage of voter turn out stood at 38 per cent with a total number of 499,042 out of 1,313,269 registered voters exercising their franchise.
