An aspiring flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Dr Bryan Acheampong, has cautioned fellow presidential hopeful Kennedy Agyepong to shed bitterness and strengthen his emotional intelligence as the party prepares for its upcoming flagbearership primaries.

Speaking on UTV’s Morning Show, Dr Acheampong stated that the NPP exists to win elections and not to cater for the personal emotions or happiness of individual members.

According to him, the party will not hesitate to sideline anyone who cannot help it secure electoral victory.

“The party exists to win elections. If you cannot win for the party, you will be dropped. And if the party later wins power, you may be brought back for consolation,” he said.

Dr Acheampong criticised what he described as repeated emotional outbursts by Kennedy Agyepong during the ongoing campaign, arguing that such conduct does not support internal unity or peace-building within the party.

“There must be a limit to emotional outbursts. It does not help the party’s peace-building process,” he stressed.

Questions Over Support for Party Flagbearer

The Abetifi MP further questioned Kennedy Agyepong’s commitment to party unity, noting that he failed to give a clear response when asked whether he would support whoever wins the primaries.

“When he was asked if he would support whoever emerges as flagbearer, he could not give a definitive answer,” Dr Acheampong observed. Two people cannot play with our hearts. If those two had given us hope that they could score, I would not have come from the back to contest,” he added.

Thank You Tour Claims

Dr Acheampong also referenced events during the party’s post-election Thank You tour, alleging that Kennedy Agyepong’s public comments were blamed by some party members for contributing to the NPP’s 2024 electoral defeat.

“During the Thank You tour, you were accused of talking too much and contributing largely to the defeat. You were even dropped from the campaign bus,” he claimed.

Leadership Concerns

He questioned whether Kennedy Agyepong, if elected flagbearer, would be capable of uniting the party and mobilising support from other contenders.

“With this kind of emotional outburst, can he galvanise the support of the other aspirants if he wins?” Dr Acheampong asked.

The remarks come amid heightened internal debates as the NPP intensifies preparations for its presidential primaries ahead of the 2028 general elections.
