A team of police and army officers yesterday conducted a swoop at Buduburam
Locals of Buduburam, want the Inspector General of Police(IGP) to investigate and prosecute the suspected criminals who were arrested during a dawn swoop in the area on Thursday.
There’s anxiety among locals that the over 100 suspects captured may come back stronger and even unleash severe attacks on the residents in retaliation, if they’re left off the hook.
Speaking on Anopa Kasapa 102.5 Fm, the Odikro of Gomoa Buduburam, Nana Kojo Essien said the enclave has been a flashpoint for criminal activities and safe haven for hoodlums, and bandits.
“I can tender evidence to a number of killings and robbery in the area. We have been living in fear all this while for so long. We’ve made several reports to the Local Police concerning the high rate of crime and killings but to no avail, until the two Policemen were shot and they were forced to deploy men to the area yesterday.” the Odikro told sit-in host Akwasi Nsiah on Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa 102.5 Fm.
His remarks follow the arrest of some 141 people on Thursday at a joint police/military swoop at Budumburam near Kasoa in the Central region.
The suspects which include 15 females are currently undergoing screening at the Police headquarters.
In a statement the Police said the move is part of measures being adopted to improve security across the country.
The statement added the exercise will be replicated in other parts of the country.
It comes after a chief was murdered in the area early this week by some unknown persons.
Meanwhile the District Chief Executive Officer, for Gomoa East in the Central Region, Solomon Darko Quarm, has advised foreigners and persons living in the camp to move elsewhere, and resettle indicating there are plans to redevelop the camp into an ultra modern market facility.
“We’ve written to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Ghana Refugee Board (GRB) that since the enclave is no more an active camp for refugees, it should be shut down so we can redevelop the place. We have already informed them and we will shut the place very soon.”
