A 46-year-old man in Bunkpurugu in the Northern region of Ghana has been gunned down by soldiers for allegedly breaking curfew.

The remains of the deceased have been deposited at the Nalerugu Hospital.

The incensed family of the deceased said the military personnel killed the man without any provocation in his compound.

However, the military claim the deceased threatened to kill them with a cutlass and tried to take a weapon from one of the patrol team members when he was caught breaking curfew.

According to the director of public affairs of the Ghana Armed Forces, Lieutenant Colonel Aggrey Quarshie the deceased rushed into his room and came out with a cutlass, but when the soldiers tried to overpower him, he also tried seizing one of their weapons then it triggered leading to his death.

The Northern regional police command told Accra-based Joy FM they are investigating the matter.

Bunkpurugu has been under curfew since the beginning of April following the death of two people in a chieftaincy clash.

About 20 houses were torched during the melee rendering several indigenes homeless. The chieftaincy brawl was between the Jamong and the Jafog clans.
