Kranka (B/A), Jan. 19, GNA - Mr Yaw Opoku, organizing secretary of the fire volunteers squad in Kranka, near Nkoranza has warned that any person found to have set fire in the bush would be arrested for prosecution.
Mr Opoku told the Ghana News Agency at Kranka that the squad was monitoring the activities of the people and would not spare anyone who would set a bushfire in the area.
He urged yam farmers to seek assistance from the volunteers in burning their farmlands to prevent the fire from spreading and destroying other people's properties.
Mr Opoku expressed grave concern that despite the huge expenditure the government was making towards the campaign against bushfires, some recalcitrant persons still set fires in the bush. He urged residents of Kranka to put out all fires in their households after 2200 hours, as that had been the cause of many domestic fire outbreaks.
He appealed to traditional rulers, unit committees, and Assembly Members to support the activities of fire volunteers for successful operations. Mr Opoku urged teachers to educate students on the dangers of bushfires to sensitise them to help protect the environment. Meanwhile, Mr George Kwabena Amisare, Assembly Member for Gyeduase in Kranka has commended the Government for taking strong measures to check bushfires in the country.
