Businessman remanded again over fake currencies

An Accra circuit court, for the second time, refused to grant bail to Izi Yusif, a businessman, who was arrested with fake Ghc50 notes totalling Ghc97,300.

This was after the prosecutor, Chief Inspector Joyce Ama Kuwornu, had told the court on Wednesday that the police were still conducting further investigations into the matter.

The court, presided over by Mr Francis Obiri, therefore, remanded Yusif into custody to reappear on December 20.

Yusif 's team of lawyers had prayed the court to admit him to bail as he would not abscond from the jurisdiction, adding he was ready to assist the police with their investigations.

Yusif, charged with possession of fake notes, had pleaded not guilty.

The facts, produced by the prosecution were that acting on an intelligence report that Yusif was dealing in drugs, the police proceeded to his house at Alajo in Accra.

During a search in Yusif’s room, fake Ghc50 cedis notes totalling Ghc97,300 cedis were found and during interrogation he said the money was given to him by one Adam for safe keeping.

Chief Inspector Kuwornu said the police were conducting investigations to arrest the said Adams.
