Butcher jailed for dealing in drugs

Accra, Oct. 31, GNA - A 30-year-old butcher who was arrested after expelling 66 pellets of cocaine was on Monday sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment with hard labour by the Greater Accra Regional Tribunal. Joydan Daniel Sessay, a Ghanaian resident in Spain, who was charged with possession of narcotic drugs without lawful authority, pleaded guilty and the tribunal convicted him accordingly.

The case as presented by Mr Augustines Obuor, an Assistant State Attorney, was that on April 23, this year, Sessay arrived at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) to board a flight to Holland but due to his strange behaviour and demeanour, personnel of the Narcotics Control Board (NACOB) picked him up for questioning.

Mr Obuor said Sessay, who was subsequently handed over to the Police for further investigation, was sent to the 37 Military Hospital where an ex-ray revealed that he had some foreign materials in his stomach.

Under the supervision of the official of NACOB and Police, Sessay expelled 66 pellets of drugs suspected to be cocaine.

During interrogation Sessay admitted the offence and stated that he was carrying the drug weighing 658.9 grammes for a fee of 3,000 Euros. He claimed that it was one Akos, who gave him the drugs and that she was waiting for him in Holland.

Mr Obuor said efforts were being made to arrest Akos.
