Abdul Ganiu, a 27-year-old butcher, met his untimely death in an attempt to intervene in a street fight between two persons at Shallot Spot located at Nyohini, a suburb of Tamale in the Northern Region.
The deceased, who had gone there in the company of one Issah Hassan, to buy food in order to break their fast, met the suspect Abdul Halik Hamza, a 19-year-old tailor and one Arafat Fuseini, engaged in fierce fisticuffs.
Abdul Ganiu, who immediately identified Arafat Fuseini as someone he knew, approached him and advised him to take things easy while he tried to calm the suspect down for peace to prevail.
But the suspect, after listening to him, angrily questioned his neutrality and asked why he even interfered in a fight he was not directly linked to.
All efforts by the deceased to explain why he had assumed the mediation role further infuriated the suspect, who directed his anger towards him with the accusation that the deceased was trying to support one faction.
Abdul Halik Hamza, without any act of provocation by the Good Samaritan, picked a piece of wood and hit the deceased twice at the back of the head, resulting in the deceased falling unconscious and bleeding profusely.
The suspect, after committing the heinous act, attempted fleeing the scene to avoid being arrested, but he was given a hot chase by the witnesses and with the help of others, was arrested and subjected to severe beatings.
They later handed him over to the police/military night patrol team, together with the piece of wood used in carrying out the act, while the deceased was later rushed to the Tamale Teaching Hospital for treatment, but died whilst on admission.
Family and friends, on hearing the demise of the butcher, broke down in tears; but later lodged an official complaint with the police and during investigations, the suspect admitted the offence in his caution statement.
He had since been arraigned before the Tamale District Court 1 presided over by Anthony Assah and provisionally charged with murder in accordance with Section 46 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
The court remanded him in prison custody to reappear periodically until an advice was given on a duplicate docket currently in the office of the Attorney General.
DAILY GUIDE gathered that the body of the deceased was released to the family and buried in accordance with Islamic customs.
Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), ASP Ebenezer Tetteh disclosed to DAILY GUIDE that the Police in the region were ready to nip criminal activities in the bud, warning residents to be mindful of their conduct in public.
He disclosed to the paper that with the recent deployment of hundreds of police to the region, there were enough men and women to help combat crime and warned criminals to be wary.

The display was characterized by the chanting of victorious songs, showmanship and display of some sophisticated equipment including very fast vehicles that would be used for operations should the need arise.
