CHRAJ settled 210 cases in Kwaebibirem last year

Kade, May 29, GNA - The Kwaebibirem District Office of the Commission on Human rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) in 2007 received a total of 235 cases/complaints for investigation and redress, out of which 210 were settled.

Of the cases/complaints received, family related issues of which lack of maintenance topped with 59 cases, neglect of pregnancy 11, neglect of spouse and children 13, denial of pregnancy 13 and custody of child 10.

Mr Frank Tetteh, District Director of CHRAJ named some of the cases the office handled as Human Rights issues of which there were 50 and seven property related cases. The District Director said between January and end of April this year, 47 cases/complaints were received and 42 of them were settled. He said of those complaints, children rights related issues numbered 20, including 16 non-maintenance of children, six non-maintenance of spouse and six denial of responsibility, with the rest being property related, with economic and social rights taking the rest of the complaints/cases received.

Mr Tetteh said in order to sensitize the general public on their fundamental human rights and freedom, about 25 Schools and Churches within the District were targeted for educational programmes. The Director said last year, a series of complaints, neglect and non-maintenance of adolescent pregnancies, which posed a great threat to the development of girl- child education and health among others were lodged at the office.

He said child labour as a result of single parenthood and broken homes were rampant in the area. The District Director therefore appealed to the Assembly, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), Stakeholders and all those who have the welfare and development of women and children at heart to co-operate with the commission to help redress the situation.
