A thought struck me as humankind celebrated International Women's Day yesterday (8/3/2013).

I wondered whether men in Ghana would have been so accepting of the status quo, if roles were reversed and women (outnumbered by men in the population in that scenario) dominated society - holding most of the important positions in both the public and private sectors.

It occurred to me that were it indeed the case that women in Ghana dominated society, by now men in Ghana would have long demanded a constitutional amendment, which would reserve half the seats in Parliament for men, and directs that half of the number of ministerial appointments made by the President should be men.

Many people in Ghana (both male and female) sometimes say that there would be far less corruption in Ghana if women ruled our nation.

Indeed some of us look forward to the day Ghana elects its first female President.

Perhaps going forward, women and their allies amongst the male population in Ghana, ought to fight for a constitutional amendment, which would reserve half the seats in Parliament for women, and stipulates that half the ministerial appointments made by the President should be women.

Were that to happen, our nation would be a fairer society - and a much better place for Ghanaian women: who, considering their immense contribution to our nation over the years, definitely deserve better than is presently the case.
