The Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (COTVET), in collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), has organised the first in series of capacity building workshops, for lecturers of technical and vocational institutions in the country.

The workshop held at Aburi, was attended by 20 participants from National Vocational Training Institute, Accra Polytechnic, College of Technology, University of Education, Winneba, Technical Examinations Unit of Ghana Education Service (GES), National Board of Polytechnic Examinations, and Technical and Vocational Education and Training Division of GES.

It was to evaluate capacity of technical and vocational institutions in the country to efficiently run courses, using the Competency Based Training (CBT) method.

The CBT mode of teaching and learning is a relatively new concept, characterised by smaller class sizes, close linkage between training institutions and industry, as well as an emphasis on practical learning methods.

Mr Dan Baffour-Awuah, Executive Director of COTVET, said the workshop formed part of series of programmes, designed to ensure that training providers in the technical and vocational sector were given the necessary support, to make the CBT roll-out successful.

Mr Michael Tsorgali, a participant and lecturer at the University of Education, Winneba, said the workshop was revealing on some of the shortcomings in teaching and exposed them to more modern and effective methods.
