CPP Makes Gains Against NPP & NDC

The respected political analyst and pollster Ben Ephson’s Daily Dispatch newspaper published polls yesterday showing dwindling fortunes for NPP and NDC in the December elections, and “an improvement in the share of votes for the Convention People’s Party”.

Speaking on Radio Afrik the Chairman of the UK & Ireland Branch of the CPP- Mr Nii Akomfrah said “whilst confirming the resurgence of the CPP, this actually understates the remarkable progress being made by Kwame Nkrumah’s Convention People’s Party (CPP)”.

The paper noted that polls it conducted in July 2007 showed, the NPP standing at 48.9%; NDC at 40.6%; CPP at 3.9%; 1.4% for PNC, with 5 per cent undecided.

The Dispatch reported yesterday that similar polls in March 2008 shows the CPP gaining on the other two main parties - the NPP has dropped to 42.2%, NDC to 39.3%, with the CPP vote rising to 11.6%, PNC also rising to 2.1%, with 4.7% of voters still undecided.

The Daily Dispatch concluded that on the basis of its March 08 polls the December 08 elections will probably go into a run-off.

Whilst this is welcome news because it confirms what many Ghanaians have been saying for many months that the CPP is on the ascendancy we believe that it understates the CPP’s current position after the CPP’s review of its first quarter campaign period and the CPP’s own internal polling. The CPP believes that our current position is nearer 20%.

The Party is targeting a 5% increase in its share of the vote every quarter using various campaign strategies and thus by September the vote will be split 3 ways, and all the signs are that if as many analysts are predicting there should be a second round ballot , the CPP will be in that second round.

The Dispatch’s poll also underscores the recent Daily Guide Internet Poll (before it was abruptly withdrawn), which put the CPP’s flagbearer Dr Paa Kwesi Nduom on 43% ahead of the NPP’s Nana Akuffo Addo at 41% , with the NDC ‘s Prof John Evans Atta Mills in a distant third on 12%.

Speaking on Radio Focus’ “Kasapreko” Mr Akomfrah had said that “the CPP is the Party with the most momentum in Ghanaian politics today, momentum driven largely by the massive influx of the youth to the CPP”

The Chairman said further that. The NPP and NDC are offering nothing new, that the NPP promised to create jobs 8 years ago , and Ghanaians do not believe Nana Akuffo Addo when he says the NPP are now going to create jobs”

“Many have seen their dreams and aspirations squandered during the NDC and now NPP years, the CPP is the only party offering hope to the youth” , he said.

Clearly the CPP is taking votes from both NPP and NDC, and this should be a signal for all with CPP routes in the NDC or in the NPP to follow the example of the Ghana’s youth and join the CPP march to the Flag Staff House come January 2009.
