Mr Bright O. Akwetey, Flag bearer Aspirant of Conventional People's Party (CPP), on Tuesday said the party has the capacity, track record and tenacity to deal "ruthlessly" with corruption if voted into power in Election 2012.
"Political parties have... paid lip services to fighting corruption, only to end up indulging in it themselves,” Mr Akwetey stated at a meeting with Greater Accra delegates of the CPP in Accra, ahead of the party's National Delegates Congress, slated for Saturday, May 12h in Sekondi.
The meeting was attended by delegates from 27 constituencies, regional executives and national executives including Ms Samia Yaba Nkrumah, CPP Chairperson; Mr Ivor Kobina Greenstreet, CPP General Secretary and Nii Amarh Akomfrah, Communications Director.
Other leading members who supported Mr. Akwetey were Mr. Abu Forgoh- National Organiser, Hajia Hamdatu- Women Organiser, and some members of the Council of Elders.
He said whilst multi-Party democracy was thriving in the country, there was too much disunity as a result of the striving for power by the National Democratic Congress and New Patriotic Party.
“We need to re-unite the country, and the only party capable of doing that is the CPP,” he said.
Mr Akwetey said Ghanaians had to demonstrate the ability to walk hand in hand as one people, “even if we do not agree as individuals on all issues”.
He said a CPP government would ensure a more prosperous and united Ghana.
The CPP Flag bearer Aspirant called on party delegates to vote for him to lead the CPP for victory.
Ms Samia Yaba Nkrumah, Leader and Chairperson of the party, called on members not to waste time fighting with people... “We are fighting for Ghanaians and not fighting any Ghanaian".
She said the party would concentrate on creating conditions for a bigger manufacturing industry, as well as a stronger human resource base.
Ms Nkrumah said education, housing and health would also be amongst CPP's key areas of focus if given the mandate to rule.
"We would focus on our ideology which is our guiding document. We would not let down the people of Ghana," she said.
Professor Agyeman Badu Akorsah, Leading CPP member who chaired the meeting said "faith and believe that only the CPP can save Ghana has kept members going over the years".
He described the CPP as a "sleeping giant" and not a "small party as some call it".
Prof. Akorsah said the country was not attaining the kind of progress it deserved because its leaders, who were supposed to serve the people, had over the years demonstrated that they were in power for their own interest.
He said the CPP had an endearing faith with the people of Ghana adding, "we will serve you until you tell us it is enough, once we are given the chance".**
