CEO of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr. Daniel Asare, has stated that calls for his resignation are politically motivated claiming that some people are interested in occupying his seat.
According to him, the agitators only want attention from the president.
Reports have revealed an ongoing tension at Korle-Bu following agitations by some workers to have the Chief Executive Officer of the hospital resign since he has reached the public sector retirement age of 60 years.
It was alleged that the staff, mostly at the senior level, have accused Dr. Daniel Asare of attempting to overstay his tenure despite hitting the age of 60 on May 31, 2020.
Dr Asare responding to the issue in an interview with GhanaWeb said, “…We are in an election year so don’t also think that politics doesn’t play a role. People think that Korle-Bu is very quiet, it will not lean to their benefit. So, there’s politics also going on. There is also politics going on, people don't want to talk about it but that's the underlying fact.
Although he admitted in the interview that he is ready to go on pension, he believes the timing was not right as he is spearheading the Coronavirus fight at the hospital.
He indicated that those agitating for the termination of his appointment must exercise patience, adding that the new appointee may experience some difficulty if the transition is sudden.
He told www.ghanaweb.com that “Until a new person comes or my contract is extended, it will be inappropriate to exit the seat especially when we are in the forefront. And I think it’s logical…Even if someone is newly appointed, he cannot perform the roles we are doing now. He needs to warm up. Especially when we are in crisis. You don’t do that.”
“So, me I’m ready to go pension and do my own thing…So people should just be patient. Even though my contract ends in September 2020, I would be 60 in May but it doesn’t mean that you can go outside your contract. So, majority of the things they are saying, they haven’t come to me. It’s just that people want attention from the president that they are also there.
