Calm returns to Bolga after Chieftaincy clash

Calm has returned to Atulbabisi electoral area in Bolgatanga where chieftaincy dispute erupted Saturday night, resulting in the destruction of houses and properties.

Residents who fled the area have returned and economic activities have began to pick up, as Police and Military personnel patrol the area.

Two of the seven people injured in the disturbances and admitted at the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital were discharged Monday morning. Doctors say the five others are currently responding to treatment and expected to be discharged soon.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Organisation and the Upper East Regional Security Council have started assessing the level of destruction for appropriate relief support to be offered victims of the incident.

The Bolgatanga Municipal Director of NADMO, Anaab Timothy, assured residents and the victims of fair distribution of relief items. He commended the security services for restoring peace to the area.

Meanwhile, no arrest have been made by the Police which is still investigating the circumstance that led to the eruption of the clash.

Currently there are two chiefs from two gates in the Bolga traditional area. One was enskined by the Nayiri and the other was enskined by the elders of the traditional area.

Supporters of the two chiefs have caused trouble in the last few years. The chieftaincy dispute was taken to court which brought relative calm to the area but tensions escalated against on Saturday night.

It is however unclear what triggered the latest incident but residents say they are living in fear.
