Suhum (E/R), Jan. 17, GNA - All is now calm at Suhum in the Suhum-Kraboa-Coaltar District in the Eastern Region after five hours demonstration by the residents to demand Police investigations into recent murders in the area.

The demonstrators mounted road blocks at both ends of the town thus blocking the main Kumasi-Accra Highway and getting passengers stranded. The first batch of Police contingent that got to scene could not contain the situation until reinforcement from the Eastern Regional Police Command arrived about two hours later.

One person, who is yet to be identified, was shot and had to be rushed to the Suhum Government Hospital while others who got injured during the pandemonium were rushed to their homes. Mr. Emmanual Asare, a spare parts dealer and a youth leader of the Suhum, told the GNA that the demonstration was as a result of the failure of the District Chief Executive Mr Michael Kofi Mensah and the Police to stop the killings.

He said a meeting was organized on Monday January 15 to discuss the situation and the Police were deployed to protect the people but ironically, another person was killed with the body left to decompose in a stream that was their source of drinking water.

Attempts by the GNA to talk to Police at Suhum failed since they claimed there were too busy to grant an interview.

As at the time the GNA left Suhum at about 1600 hours on Wednesday the body of the latest victim was still lying in the stream unattended to.
