Canada Supports Flood Relief

Accra, December 3, 2007- The Canadian High Commissioner in Ghana, Mr. Darren Schemmer recently travelled to the Northern Region to visit areas affected by the flooding, commission a new primary school building and announce approval of two new projects. The Government of Canada is working with local authorities and organizations to help the victims of the flooding rebuild their lives.

“On behalf of all Canadians, I wish to offer our support to those affected by the flooding” said Mr. Schemmer. “We commend the authorities and local organizations on the significant efforts under way to provide relief to the communities and people in need.”

The High Commissioner and the Saboba District Chief Executive Azumah Zamoro Sanda commissioned a new three-classroom block in Galaa where school enrolment has risen dramatically in the past year. The block also includes office space and latrines were also built nearby. The block was paid for through the District-Wide Assistance Program where funds are given directly to District authorities to implement their chosen priorities.

The High Commissioner also announced that Canada is contributing $CAD 70,000 to Action Aid International, Ghana and $CAD 100,000 to CARE International, Ghana. Action Aid will distribute food and sanitation supplies to those most affected. CARE will assist in agricultural recovery in 5 affected communities. The projects are part of the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI) $CAD 500,000 to support the flood relief efforts of local organizations working in the affected districts in Northern Ghana. A portion of the fund remains to be allocated and the CFLI Coordinator in Ghana is currently assessing flood relief proposals.

Through the Canadian International Development Agency Canada has a long term commitment to northern Ghana. Projects focussing on good governance, water, food security and agriculture address the basic needs of the people in the area and to reduce their vulnerability to events such as this year’s floods.
