The Canadian government has issued alert to its citizens in Ghana to step up their security in the wake of Tuesday’s kidnapping of two of its nationals in the Ashanti regional capital, Kumasi.

3News on Wednesday broke the news of the two Canadian women kidnapped at Ahodwo on Tuesday at about 8:25pm. The women, one of whose name has been given as Lauren, were forced into a vehicle just when they stepped out of their apartment at Silver Spring Avenue.

The Police have confirmed the incident, stating investigations have commenced in earnest in a bid to rescue the two volunteers who are in the country on the ticket of Youth Challenge International, a nongovernmental organisation.

But the government on Thursday, June 6 issued a fresh “violent crimes” alert for Ghana, stating armed robbery and kidnapping may occur.

“Be aware of your surroundings and avoid walking alone or displaying signs of wealth. Ensure that windows and doors in your residence are secured,” the Canadian government tweeted on June 5.

It has since June 6 updated its security and safety alert on Ghana on its official website to include the latest information.
