Accra (Greater Accra) 9th July '99 The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) said on Thursday that the education sector lacks systematic management training for heads of institutions. It said basic level schools are bedevilled with problems relating to the teaching and speaking of the English language.

Mr Joseph Frimpong, Deputy General Secretary of GNAT in charge of education and professional development, said this at a meeting with reporters and a six-member team of the Canadian Teachers Federation (CTF) who are in the country to undertake training programmes for teachers.

He said problems in the educational sector call for a meaningful intervention, such as improving management skills of heads of institutions. He noted that GNAT's relationship with the CTF has existed for about three decades, but "it has become necessary (for GNAT) to renew the friendship so as to benefit from their resources."

Mr Frimpong said for a start, the CTF team would, from July 11, train some 40 basic schoolteachers in science, mathematics and English language at Takoradi. Eighty heads of senior secondary and technical schools would also be given management training at Sunyani. Both courses are estimated at 80 million cedis; the Canadians would contribute 47 million cedis.

The leader of the team, Mr Charles Krause, said the CTF is pleased to be part of the programme, adding that they are looking forward to sharing ideas with their Ghanaian counterparts.
