Former Kotoko goalie George Owu has offered a different view to calls for the cancellation of the Ghana Premier League.

Like all major sporting activities in the world, the GPL is on break due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Calls for the truncation of the league have come from certain quarters with King Faisal’s Alhaji Grusah and New Edubease’s Abdul Salam Yakubu being the proponents.

They argue that the indefinite suspension has affected the calendar of the league and with the FA determined to align it with the European leagues, it would be prudent to declare it null and void.

"The GFA has to give us time to prepare our team when the pandemic is over to play the second round because you can't tell us to resume immediately (play the following week) he told Asempa FM.

"We need at least two weeks to a month to prepare and play the league of which time is not on our side because we want to synchronize with the European calendar, Salam said.

But Owu who is fondly remembered for his delaying tactics in the 2004 CAF Confed Cup against Hearts of Oak says the league should continue.

He maintains that a truncation of the league will kill the buzz and excitement it has generated.

He is thus counting on the FA to make a decision that will serve the long term interest of Ghana football.

"The league is improving in terms of how the supporters are going to the stadium and how Legon Cities are inviting big artistes to the stadium".

"Everything shows that the league is growing and the interest is increasing after every matchday. The Ghana Football Association will decide whether to continue or cancel the league but they are waiting for some months to see. We have to continue the league to see what God will do, Owu told Adeiso-based Tru FM".
