Canoe man shot dead

A 51-year-old farmer is in cells assisting the Tema Regional police command with investigations into the circumstance under which he purportedly killed his friend at Prampram in the Ningo-Prampram district of Accra.

The suspect, Tetteh Martey, who is said to be a hunter, was allegedly offended by the 38-year-old canoe carver, Lartey Ayim, who together with two of his (Ayim’s) friends – David Kojo, 32, a tailor and James Kponortey, 28, also a canoe carver – were reportedly eating in front of his (Martey’s) room and were confronted by him.

The confrontation purportedly led to a misunderstanding that ensued between them, resulting in the shooting of Ayim in the knee on June 28, 2015 at about 8:00 pm.

Tetteh was said to have initially entered his room, in the course of the argument and brought out a hammer, but he was disarmed by Lartey Ayim and his friends.

Not satisfied, he went into the room again and returned with his double barrel short gun and allegedly fired twice at Ayim and his friends.

Lartey and his friends sustained various degrees of injury but he (Lartey Ayim) was hit in the knee and swooned instantly.

Upon information, the police reportedly rushed to the scene and saw him lying in a pool of blood dead.

The two other victims were immediately rushed to the Prampram Polyclinic for treatment but were referred to the Tema General Hospital where David Kojo was treated and discharged.

Kponortey however, was admitted at the hospital and he was responding to treatment.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Juliana Obeng, Public Affairs Manageress of the Tema Regional Police Command, in a statement said the corpse was deposited at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra for preservation and autopsy and was later released to the bereaved family for burial.

Meanwhile, Tetteh Martey has been remanded into police custody as investigations continue.
