Cape Coast to get new science resource centre

Cape Coast, May 31, GNA - The Member of Parliament (MP) for Cape Coast, Mr Barton Oduro has initiated the establishment of an ultra-modern science resource centre in Cape Coast as part of measures to redeem fallen educational standards in the area.

The science resource centre will comprise of physics, chemistry and biology laboratories, as well as an ICT centre with projectors for audio visual learning.

Mr Oduah Sampson, Administrative Officer at the office of the MP, who made this known in Cape Coast on Monday, said the project will benefit junior and senior high schools, as well as technical schools in the metropolis.

The project, he said is to help address the problem of inadequate and non-existence of science laboratories in most schools in the metropolis, and help promote interest in the study of the sciences by students.

The Ghana Education Service (GES), the International Training and Educational Consultancy (itec Ltd), Oguaaman Council, Cape Coast Technical Institute, and the Cape Coast Metropolitan Assembly are supporting it.

He said his office has held series of discussions with the Head of the Science Resource Unit of the GES, to identify science oriented projects in educational establishments, and assist in equipping them with the requisite facilities to meet high academic standards.

He said itec Ltd has also agreed to sponsor the supply of equipments through the GES to upgrade the centre to befit the status of a modern science resource centre.

Mr Sampson said the Cape Coast Technical Institute has been tasked to submit a supplementary budget for the structural expansion of the project, and added that the project will help create jobs.

The metropolitan directorate of the GES has therefore been tasked to identify science and ICT teachers particularly, the youth under the National Youth Employment Program, for employment to run the facility.

He was of the hope that stakeholders will gear their commitment towards ensuring the smooth implementation of the ultra-modern science resource centre.
