After the heinous lynching of Captain Maxwell Mahama has generated a lot of public sympathy for the family and damnation for the perpetuators, some heartless and dubious individuals appear to be taking advantage of the unfortunate incident to fill their pockets.
One individual by name Modesta Adewuje Alobawone who claims to be a friend to the deceased family is raising funds on gofundme.com, a crowdfunding platform that allows people to raise money for life events such as to support victims of accidents and illnesses.
The platform has a picture of the late Captain with his wife and kids, appealing to people to donate money to be given to the family. So far, about $2,200 has been raised out of the targeted $100,000.
Capt. Rtd. Dennis Mahama, father of the Late Captain Maxwell Mahama who spoke exclusively to ghanaweb.com decried such individuals to desist from the act.
‘I have heard some people claiming to be spokespersons to the family and are using my son's name to raise fund. They should stop that. People should not take advantage of this misfortune to raise funds for themselves’.
According to the retired Army Captain, only Fidelity bank opened an account in the name of the children to contribute to the children’s upbringing following the unfortunate demise of their father.
The ex-military officer who recounted the tragic incident with teary eyes also revealed that public sympathy has really comforted the family, adding that he is expecting justice to be meted out to the perpetuators.
‘My son's lynching should be the last. Never again should instant justice be meted out to an alleged criminal. What happened should never happen to any human being again. I have not seen animals beating other animals to death, neither have I seen human beings doing that to animals, how much more colleague humans’.
Rtd. Captain Mahama also noted they will be forming an NGO to particularly educate the citizenry on instant justice.
