Four schoolchildren were knocked down and killed by a speeding vehicle at Egya No.2, a fishing community near Anomabo on the Cape Coast-Accra highway.
According to eyewitnesses, one other child who was also hit by the vehicle was in a critical condition at the Saltpond Hospital in the region.
According to sources, the children were on their way home from school on Tuesday afternoon and were knocked down when they were crossing the road.
The driver of the Hyundai 4×4 vehicle which killed the children was later arrested, and is currently in the custody of the Saltpond police.
Immediately after the unfortunate incident, residents of the area blocked the Anomabo section of the highway in protest against the incessant knockdowns and killings on the road.
According to them, many requests for speed ramps to be constructed on that portion of the road had fallen on deaf ears.
Some of the residents asserted that last Tuesday’s accident was the second in one week. “So far, about seven people had been killed on the same stretch within a week,” a resident pointed out.
