Effiduasi (Ashanti)- Yaw Gaha, a 38-year-old carpenter, has been sentenced to nine months' imprisonment in hard labour by the Sekyere East District Tribunal on his own plea of stealing 10 fowls.
The tribunal chaired by Mr Winifred Kwadwo Owusu ordered that the fowls should be sold and the proceeds paid into the government chest if no one claims ownership after three months.
Police Chief Inspector Charles Kwadzo Abotsi, said on December 31, last year, Madam Akua Amoanimaa, an Effiduasi trader, detected that about eight of her fowls in had been stolen from their coop.
He said on two occasions, Madam Amoanima met Gaha selling fowls in a polythene bag in Kumasi. At another time, Madam Amoanima travelled with the accused from Effiduasi to Kumasi on the same bus and saw him holding a polythene bag containing fowls.
Suspecting that the fowls were those stolen from her home, Madam Amoanima asked the driver to stop at nearby police station for Gaha to be questioned but the driver refused.
On reaching Kumasi however, Madam Amoanima and some of the passengers impressed upon the driver to send them to a police station for the matter to be reported.
Police Chief Inspector Abotsi who prosecuted said on reaching the Zongo Police Station, Gaha took to his heels as the other passengers made for the charge office.
Gaha was however arrested and admitted stealing the fowls when confronted.
