Catholic University student crowned ‘Miss Health Ghana 2019’

A final year Public Health student of the Catholic University College of Ghana (CUCG), Miss Ohemaa Akua Achiaa Agyekum has been crowned ‘Miss Health Ghana 2019’.

She emerged the winner among 10 contestants at the end of a maiden ‘Miss Health Ghana’ contest organised by the National Health Students’ Association of Ghana (NAHSAG).

It was to identify capable and skillful health students and graduates as ambassadors to advocate for the individual Ghanaian to contribute in promoting quality health living and well-being in the country.

This came to light when Miss Agyekum presented her crown to Professor Daniel Obeng-Ofori, the Vice-Chancellor (VC) at the University.

Prof. Obeng-Ofori said the CUCG was noted for academic excellence as well as ethical and moral values, which were essential ingredients for human development.

He said it was therefore not surprising that Miss Agyekum achieved that feat, saying, that had lifted up the image of the University and urged her to use that achievement to influence society positively.

The VC said the institution had emerged the winner of all competitions it had participated in, including those organised by Private Universities Students’ Association of Ghana (PUSAG) and Entrepreneurial Action in Us (ENACTUS), describing it as something unique about the University, besides its academic excellence.

“ENACTUS is an international organisation that connects students, academics and business leaders through entrepreneurial-based projects that empower people to transform opportunities into real, sustainable progress for themselves and their communities”.

Mr. Hammond Oppong Kwarteng, an Assistant Registrar and Head of the University’s Relations Unit said the CUCG had been performing impressively among other tertiary institutions in terms of curricular and extra-curricular activities.

“The students have been excelling and that is due to the high level of discipline, high sense of morality and hard work of the University”, he emphasised.

Mr. Kwarteng cited that the University was the 2018 winner of the Duapa Challenge Competition organised by the British Council, two successive years, 2012-2013 national champion of ENACTUS and have also won six gold medals in athletics and football in the 2018 PUSAG games, among others.

Earlier in an interview, Miss Agyekum described the competition as highly significant for quality health promotion in the country but very keen and challenging contest, since she met extremely brilliant and intelligent participants.

She said that notwithstanding, she sailed through as the eventual winner because of the holistic professional values and quality academic training impacted on her by the University.

Miss Agyekum particularly mentioned Dr. Vitalis Bawontuo, the Dean of Faculty of Health and Allied Sciences and members of the local chapter of NAHSAG for their “overwhelmingly support” that gave her morale booster and enthusiasm throughout the competition.
