President John Dramani Mahama has declared that through the efforts of his administration and Ghanaians, the Ghana cedi is on track to be ranked among the world’s best-performing currencies in 2025.

He said this during his New Year’s speech to Ghanaians, where he cited a dramatic fall in inflation, currency stability, and restored international credibility as key achievements.

The president asserted that through "prudent management and difficult but necessary reforms," his government has steered the economy from a period of significant distress to a path of robust recovery.

Highlighting the administration's accomplishments, President Mahama noted a sharp decline in inflation from "distressing levels of 23% and above" at the end of 2024.

“We have reduced inflation from distressing levels of 23% and above by the end of 2024, and we are hopeful of ending 2025 with inflation in the single digits, just above 5%,” he said.

The president also declared that the country has achieved relative currency stability and that the cedi is “on track to be ranked among the world’s best-performing currencies in 2025."

Ghana is rising again – Mahama declares

On the international front, President Mahama stated that Ghana has successfully repaired its credibility with global partners and is in the process of leaving the IMF.

“We have restored Ghana's credibility with international partners and successfully completed the renegotiation of our debt obligations on terms that protect our sovereignty while ensuring sustainability.

“We are beginning the process of exiting the IMF programme with dignity, not as supplicants, but as partners," he said.

The president further outlined a series of plans, which included accelerating growth, creating opportunities for the youth, and restoring business confidence, which has led to a "significant increase" in both domestic and foreign direct investment.
