Central University wins debate to commemorate Commonwealth Day

The Central University College has emerged winner in the 2020 Commonwealth debate organized by the Parliament of Ghana.

The debate for tertiary schools which included University of Ghana, Central University, Methodist University, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Abetifi Presbyterian College of Education and Agogo Presbyterian College of Education, was on the topic ‘Ghana Beyond Aid: An attainable feat or a political slogan’.

At the end of the debate, Central University emerged winners, while the University of Ghana and KNUST got the 2nd and 3rd positions.

Speaking for the motion, Central University College’s representative said “Ghana Beyond Aid is achievable because measures have been put in place to achieve its implementation. The Ghana Beyond Aid charter has been adopted by the UNDP as a policy direction for its charter.”

He debated that Planting for Food and Jobs as well as One District One Factory, are key measures that have been put in place to ensure we have an inclusive and sustainable Ghana.

The 2020 Commonwealth Day is on the theme: Delivering a common future: Connecting, innovation, transforming.

Speaking at the event, First Deputy Speaker, Joseph Osei Owusu, reading Queen Elizabeth’s speech to the Commonwealth, urged countries to protect natural resources with greater care as new ways are deployed for prosperity.



“…Advances in technology and in modern media have now enabled many more people to witness and enjoy with remarkable immediacy. This experience of Commonwealth connection in areas such as education, medicine and conservation. Looking to the future, this connectivity means we are also aware perhaps as never before that wherever we live, our choices and actions affect the wellbeing of other people and communities far away and in every different circumstance,” he read.

He added that “For many, this awareness awakens the desire to employ our planet’s natural resources with greater care. It is encouraging to see how the countries of Commonwealth continue to device new ways of working together to achieve prosperity whilst protecting our planet.”
