Certs in Ghana may soon be worthless - Edu. Consultant warns

An Education Consultant and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of VIAM Africa Centre for Education and Social Policy Dr. Prince Armah has warned that the Ghana is currently inching into an age where certificates attained by students will no longer be valued.

According to him, certificates obtained by students from various fields of studies may not be considered if the current trend of examination leakages persists in the country’s educational system.

“Our Certificates will become worthless in years to come if measures are not put in place to bring an end to examination malpractices in the country”, he observed.

Speaking on the Ultimate Breakfast Show hosted by Julius-Caesar Anadem, Dr. Armah said the current trend where examination papers are leaked with impunity could compromise the integrity of certificates attained and therefore, higher institutions as well as employers outside the country will not be willing to engage persons in possession of such certificates.

He blamed the upsurge in the canker to the lack of regulations to severely deal with persons who are caught neck-deep in the leakage of examination questions calling on the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) to revoke licenses of institutions engaged in the practice.

“We need robust measures in place to address these challenges. We need to formulate regulations to stop examination malpractices”, he added.

According to him, the situation has become pronounced because of the monopoly enjoyed by WAEC making it very complacent in the conduct of examination in the country.

In the light of this, he underscored the need for the examination body to be taken on by persons who may in one way or the other be affected by the way WAEC goes about its dealings.
