The Ashanti regional chairman of the New Patriotic Party Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, will be arraigned in court today for allegedly assaulting a Member of Parliament.
Wontumi, who spent the night in the cells of the Kumasi Central Police Station, reported himself to the Police on Tuesday after he was declared wanted for assaulting the lawmaker for Manhyia North Collins Owusu Amankwa and the constituency Secretary of the area, Felix Ibrahim.
The confusion between them was triggered by a disagreement over the ongoing Limited Voters registration exercise.
Scores of supporters of the main opposition NPP besieged the premises of the Adum Police station in Kumasi demanding the immediate release of their regional chairman.
Meanwhile, the NPP Regional Secretary Sam Pyne claims the arrest is a ploy by their political opponents.
“People assaulted officers at Asokore Mampong, they were let off the hock, they destroyed public property and Electoral Commission equipment, yet nothing has been said about it. And when there is an internal party matter, even though the person reported it, we are making it look like a genocide or some treasonable offence.
“…All these things are political and that the powers that are or the mighty hands are pulling their strength. I see it as political,” Pyne told the media.
