Chambas Steps Down

Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, Member of Parliament for Bimbilla Constituency, resigned from Parliament yesterday, February 14th, to assume office as Executive Secretary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Dr. Chambas served as an NDC member of both the second and third parliament of the Fourth Republic. In his farewell statement to Parliament, however, he noted extensively the support he received from the majority party, and in particular from President Kufuor himself, which was necessary for his nomination and election as Executive Secretary.

In this new position, Mr. Chambas plans to push for "greater integration and cooperation of West African States...and the creation of opportunities for the private sector growth."

Though he has much to look forward to, he is leaving something behind: a vacant seat in parliament, once secured by the minority party, but now up for grabs.

Presently there are 91 members of the NDC, 100 members of the NPP, and 8 independent members in parliament, so this last seat could make all the difference in the event of a close vote.
