Prof Isaac Boadi is the Dean of the Faculty of Accounting and Finance at UPSA
The Dean of the Faculty of Accounting and Finance at the University of Professional Studies, Accra, Prof Isaac Boadi, has stated that Ghana’s healthcare challenges are rooted in systemic failures and not only individual mistakes.
Speaking on the AM Show on JoyNews monitored by MyNewsGh, Prof Isaac Boadi reacted to the findings of a committee investigating the death of 29-year-old engineer Charles Amissah.
The committee concluded that Charles Amissah died after being denied emergency treatment at three major hospitals in Accra despite arriving alive at each facility.
Commenting on the matter, Prof Isaac Boadi questioned whether even competent doctors could perform effectively in a weak healthcare structure.
“When a patient dies from what many believe was preventable, society will demand accountability,” he said.
He added, “Can we have a good doctor in a broken system? A good doctor in a broken system can’t function well.”
Prof Isaac Boadi also pointed to the performance of Ghanaian health professionals abroad as proof that the problem may not only be about training.
“If you pick a Ghanaian health worker and place them in another system that works well, they perform differently,” he said.
According to him, the country must focus attention on fixing structural problems in the health sector.
