The 36-year old man Charles Antwi who attempted to assassinate the outgoing President John Dramani Mahama has been released from Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) custody.

Charles who pulled a gun in a church to kill the outgoing President whilst service was ongoing stayed in the custody for more than a year after the High Court quashed a Circuit Court decision that sentenced him to ten years in prison.

The High Court decision was pronounced on August 31, 2015, however, Charles was treated for a few months at the Accra psychiatric hospital and then was subsequently remanded in BNI custody inspite of the high court decision.

Human rights lawyer, Francis Sosu petitioned the Attorney General (AG) weeks ago demanding his release from what he described as unlawful custody.

Charles Antwi after his release told Ultimate News’ Wilberforce Asare that he no longer intends to kill the President and that he is returning to his family in Kumasi now that he is a free man.
