Chereponi conflict: 5-member committee formed to deal with violence

The Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery, has inaugurated a five-member fact-finding committee to investigate the incidents leading to the deadly violence between Konkombas and Chokosis in the Chereponi District of the Northern Region.

The committee is mandated to identify the cause of the conflict and make appropriate recommendations. The committee has until 12 February 2019 to submit its report.

The chiefs and people of the Konkomba and Chokosi communities have also signed peace pact to ensure calm in the area.

The Northern Regional Security Council held a peace summit for both ethnic groups on Thursday, 10 January 2019.

Chiefs, Opinion leaders, top political figures, youth groups from both Anufor and Konkomba communities participated in the summit.

Bloody clashes between the two tribes resulted in at least three deaths, several injuries and the torching of scores of houses.

Hundreds of people in the communities had to flee to neigbouring West African country Togo during the clashes.
