Ghana Football Administrator Chief Bakare has survived a foiled robbery and what police believe to be a suspected murder attempt. The incident took place on Wednesday afternoon near his Grader Estate residence off the Spintex road in Accra.

Mr. Bakare who is management member of the local Black Stars played professional football in Nigeria in the late 70s and 80s and is a close associate of the President of the Ghana Football Association, Mr. Kwasi Nyantakyi, as well a favourite amongst many top Ghanaian sports journalists.

According to eyewitnesses, the assailants (a man and a woman) laid ambush outside the victim's house before the man rammed his vehicle and then proceeded to chase Mr Bakare on foot with a 12 inch butcher’s knife.

Inspector EE Kumi of the Teshie Nungua Police is confident that investigations will be swift.

This may be as a result of a brave eyewitness who recorded the entire incident on her mobile phone.

A group of onlookers led by a Kumasi based contractor who gave his name as Nana Bizi came to Mr Bakare's rescue when they chased down and effected a citizen's arrest on the attacker.

The intervention and the quick action of other onlookers allowed the victim to take refuge in a neighbour’s house.

Police say the female accomplice, described only as Salome and fair in complexion with a slight build bolted the scene while as her partner believed to be in his early 30’s was captured and is currently in custody at the Teshie Nungua Police Station.

A cream Mercedes Benz which the attackers used for the operation has also been impounded by the police after it was retrieved by the vigilante witnesses.

The motive for the attack remains unclear, but the 57 year old father of four from Agona Wiamoasi in the Ashanti region has thanked the doctor and nurses on duty at the LEKMA Hospital in Teshie Nungua. ''I am confident that we will get to the bottom of this and very thankful for the way and manner I was looked after when I was brought to this hospital''

Although he would state it categorically, Mr Bakare has not rule out the possibility that the attack could have been plotted to look like a robbery an not attempted murder.

''The Police are doing their investigations so I will leave them to it but I am also on the alert due to the unusual circumstances surrounding this attack''.

"I thought it was a robbery but when the man jumped into his car and tried to smash my vehicle instead of running away, it did not make sense at all''.

Mr. Bakare is currently in good health after being discharged from the Lekma hospital and thanked Accra based radio station Happy FM who sent a crew to the scene led by ace presenter Odiasempa Oware.
