The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, has expressed concern over the growing trend of youth insubordination and drug abuse in Ghana, urging government collaboration to address these pressing issues.

Speaking on his behalf during the Eid-ul-Fitr prayers at the Independence Square, the Chief Imam expressed concern over growing indiscipline among students, noting issues such as disrespect for teachers, unruly conduct at sports events, and other troubling behaviours.

He said these behaviours could negatively shape the country’s future leaders.

“Some students can beat up their own teachers, slap and attack them… Today’s youth are tomorrow’s leaders. What kind of leaders are we building?” the Imam asked, stating the urgent need to restore discipline in educational institutions.

He also raised concerns about drug abuse, particularly within the Muslim community, noting that addiction and involvement in the drug trade are destroying the youth and weakening the moral fabric of society.

The Chief Imam offered to partner with government agencies on programs to combat indiscipline and substance abuse, emphasising that public education, law enforcement, and mentorship could be part of a collaborative strategy to safeguard the next generation.

Eid-ul-Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan, provided the platform for the Chief Imam to highlight the need for moral guidance, civic responsibility, and youth mentorship, stressing that addressing these challenges is critical for Ghana’s stability and the development of its future leaders.

Despite the concerns, the Chief Imam also expressed gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama for his personal gestures and support over the years, describing the President’s actions as a model of filial responsibility and kindness.
