Chief appeals for infrastructure for school

Asokore-Mampong (Ash), Nov.22, GNA - Nana Boakye Ansah Debrah Chief of Asokore-Mampong, near Kumasi, on Friday called on the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) to provide additional infrastructures for the Asokore-Mampong M/A Basic School to avoid the shift system be run there. He said that the classrooms for the school were not enough to carter for the increasing student population. Nana Debrah was inaugurating 80,000 Ghana Cedi GetFund Junior High School (JHS), comprising six unit classrooms, library, offices and stores and teachers' common room and a Kindergarten.

He said the World Bank was assisting in fencing around the school and appealed to the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council to help to school to complete it to prevent people from using the compound for social activities which retarded teaching and learning. Nana Debrah said that he would re-introduce a scholarship scheme to assist brilliant bur needy students continue with their education. He appealed to parents to invest in the education of their children and to encourage them to learn hard.

The chief commended the School Management Committee (SMC) and the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) for contributing to the development of the school. Mr. Osei Assibey Antwi, Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister, who represented Mr. Emmanuel Asamoah Owusu-Ansah, the Regional Minister, said government was committed to promoting the education and welfare of children in the country. He said that the development of any nation depended on education and called on school children to take advantage of government educational policies and acquire skulls and knowledge needed for national development.

Mr. Kwabena Agyapong, former Secretary to President Kufuor and citizen of the town said, the nation has a future considering the number of children in schools stressing that many great men and women came to the limelight through education.

He said learning was the only way through which people could fight poverty and ignorance and called on parents to ensure that they give quality education to their children so that they contribute to the development of the country.

Mr. Agyapong pledged six computers for the school and said government was doing all that it could to development education and called on all Ghanaians to support the initiative.

Mr. Nicholas Gyebi, the Officer in charge of the Asawasi sub-Metropolitan Office of Education, called on the authorities to establishment ICT centres to cater for the cluster of schools in the area. Mr. Simon Aboagye Poku, head teacher of the school and Assembly member for Asokore-Mampong, called on teachers and parents to cooperate in the training of children.
