Chief calls for more support for needy children

Effutu-Sankor (C/R), Sept. 25, GNA - A member of the Effutu Traditional Council, Neenyi Kodwo Tetteh III, on Saturday called on philanthropists and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGO) to increase their support for brilliant but needy children in the society. Neenyi Tetteh said research indicated that certain financially well-placed individuals and NGOs in the country had over the years been playing commendable roles in this direction but stated that a lot more still remained to be accomplished to enable as many needy children as possible to realise their dreams.

He noted that poverty had deprived millions of needy children with potentials in the rural communities to realise their dreams for the benefit of themselves, families, communities and the nation. Neenyi Tetteh said this was for this reason why support for such children both material and financial should be increased for needy but clever children in the country.

Neenyi Tetteh who is also the chief of Effutu-Sankor, near Winneba, was speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency at Sankor, at the weekend after a citizen of the town, Mr James Kofi Annan, a philanthropist, had given an amount of 22 million cedis to cover his scholarship for 29 needy but promising children in the community. Some of the beneficiaries are currently pursuing basic, secondary, technical and vocational courses within the Awutu-Effutu-Senya district. The scholarships cover books, cash and sewing machines. Neenyi Tetteh appealed to the people of Sankor and surrounding areas to co-operate with the traditional authorities and other stakeholders in the district to find a lasting solution to problems confronting the educational sector in the area.

He praised Mr Kofi Annan for his initiative and expressed the hope that other financially well to do citizens of the area would emulate Mr Annan's example to enable more needy children to achieve the dreams.
