Whindo (W/R), Sept. 20, GNA - The Chief and elders of Whindo near Takoradi, have launched a peace programme to educate the people on the need to refrain from acts and utterances that could result in violence in the run-up to Election 2008.

It would involve the delivering of peace messages at public forums, market places, Churches and Mosques in Assakae, Whindo, Mampong, Pretea, Bomba, Akromakrom, Tumantu, Komfoeku other communities.

Nana Kwesi Essiem IV, Chief of Whindo, disclosed these in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Whindo on Thursday. He said the area was deprived in terms of good roads, potable water, sanitation facilities and schools and any acts of violence could compound the problems of the people.

Nana Essiem urged members of political parties not to consider their opponents as enemies instead they should regard them as partners in development.

He said "Ghana is the only country we have and we should not commit acts that would polarise the people and destroy the good image of our country because of our political differences". Nana Essiem urged women to convince their husbands, fathers, brothers and sons not to allow selfish politicians to use them to achieve their parochial interest.

He appealed to the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly to rehabilitate the 10-kilometre Kwesimintsim-Assakae-Whindo road to facilitate socio-economic activities. Nana Essiem also called for the construction of a modern bridge to replace the old wooden structure across River Whin.
