Chief expresses concern about street children

Ayeasu (B/A) Aug. 2, GNA - Nana Frempah Toatuo, Chief of Ayeasu, a farming community in Techiman Municipality has expressed concern about the number of children of school-going age who roam the streets and would not attend school.

The chief was speaking at a community appraisal meeting organised by the people to take stock of their achievements and how to address their problems.

He blamed parents of such children and urged them to enrol them at the community's day care centre to prepare them for formal school so they do not grow to become delinquents.

Nana Frempah re-echoed the need for parents to invest much of their resources in the education of their children so they could become responsible citizens.

He expressed regret about the poor performance of students of Ayeasu-Atrensu Local JSS in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), even though the Government had provided decent accommodation for the school.

The chief suggested the selection of a team to conduct a research into the causes of the downward trend of education in the area for the necessary strategy be adopted to rectify the situation.

Mr. Daniel Kyere, Assembly Member, called on parents to visit the schools to encourage teachers and to find out how their children were faring in order to help correct any lapses.

He asked parents to ensure that their children used their leisure hours profitably by doing their home work exercises and desist from attending video shows, concerts and dances.

The Assembly Member stressed the need for the people to pay their respective water and sanitation levies for the maintenance of the facilities for their longer lifespan.

Mr. Ofori Attah, chairman of the unit committee congratulated the youth of the area for their active participation in communal labour activities and urged them to maintain the spirit to help move the area forward in development.
