Chiefs appeal to govt to pay salaries of teachers

Abora-Afrangua (C/R), Aug 25, GNA - The people of Abora-Afrangua have appealed to the government to take up the payment of salaries of nursery and primary school teachers in the community.

They said inhabitants of the town contribute a total of 400,000 cedis monthly to meet the salaries of the two teachers who man the two institutions and this had been difficult for them.

Addressing the press conference organised by the Abora-Etsufi Traditional Council on Monday Mr Andy Amoah, Secretary of the council, said attempts to get the government to take up the payment of the salaries of the teachers had proved unsuccessful. He appealed to the government to ensure early completion of roads in the area to facilitate the transportation of goods to the marketing centres and to link the area to the national electricity grid. Mr Amoah said though some of the communities in the area had high-tension electricity poles they had not been provided with transformers.

He said floodwaters have washed away part of the Afrangua/Saltpond Junction road that was tarred recently and this showed that the contractor did a shoddy work Mr Amoah expressed concern about widespread poverty in the area and appealed to the government to consider establishing cottage industries in the area.
