Kumasi, July 16, GNA - The National House of Chiefs (NHC) has called for an amendment of the 1992 Constitution to allow for chiefs to be represented on the Ghana Education Service (GES) Council.

Wulugu Naba Pugansoa Naa Professor John Nabila, President of the House, said their inclusion was necessary to enable them to take active part in decisions and other relevant matters bordering on education development.

He noted that they have always served as strategic partners of the government in the delivery of education, citing their involvement in the construction of classroom blocks, supply of learning materials and other interventions to support teachers and brilliant but needy school children.

Wulugu Professor Nabila was addressing a meeting of the NHC in Kumasi on Friday.

The Chieftaincy Act, Draft Land Bill, Sector Policy for Harmonization and Validation Programme for the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Culture, Causes and Resolution of Chieftaincy and Land Conflicts were among issues that were discussed.

Wulugu Professor Nabila underlined the need for the various Houses of Chiefs to constitute Mediation Committees, which would serve as the first line of action in the resolution of chieftaincy and land disputes in their areas.

He said members of this committee should comprise of people with in-depth knowledge of chieftaincy matters to ensure effective resolution of these conflicts.

Records at the NHC indicate that they are currently about 100 chieftaincy conflicts, related mainly to land, enstoolment, destoolment, enskinment and deskinment.

Wulugu Professor Nabila said the chieftaincy institution was sacred and therefore all attempts should be made to protect it.

He called on traditional councils to educate chiefs on the Chieftaincy Act to enable them to become abreast with their roles and responsibilities in nation building.
