Tension is mounting at Akyem Apedwa in the East Akyem Municipality in the Eastern Region, over as an alleged illegal installation of a chief for the area.
This has resulted in the arrest of 18 persons suspected to be land guards from Kasoa by the Kyebi Divisional Police Command.
They were arrested for violating the public order law by guarding the installation of a certain Yaw Ofosu Boadu as the new chief of Akyem Apedwa.
The installation comes barely a month after the late chief of Apedwa, Osaberima Obenakwa Kwafira II was buried after his funeral was delayed for almost a year.
The late chief died on December 18, 2014 and was buried on 1st November this year.
Members of the Agona Royal Family, reported the matter to the Kyebi Police of which the police secured an injunction from court to stop the installation of the chief.
When the police got information that the installation was taking place, they rushed to stop it but met resistance and had to fire tear gas to disperse the crowd.
Meanwhile, the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council, in a statement signed by D.M Ofori Atta, Secretary to the Okyenhene, and copied to GNA stated that, the installation of Yaw Ofosu Boadu as new Apedwa chief under the supervision of the Abusuapanin was unlawful and violated the customs of area.
According to Baffour Owurae Antwi II, the Akyem Apedwa Krontinhene, as far as the kingmakers were concerned, there is currently no chief at Apedwa and the royal family would present a credible person to them in due time.
